The  Rhino.

Although black rhinos are very rare in the wild, our guests have of late been very lucky  seeing them as they walk from one browsing habitat to the next. They live mostly in the Bushland habitats and so it’s often hard to see them in the open grasslands as was the case with ranger Jaffery with his guests  on an early morning game drive. The female black rhino was all by herself and was a little bit timid outside her Bushland habitat.

The wildebeest migration has been grazing the vast mara plains for over one and a half months. There still seems to be plenty of grass around to keep them busy for the next two months.

On a full-day game drive Peter and his guests went down to mara river where alot of gnus have been congregating for the last 10 days. After patiently waiting for a crossing it finally paid off and a few gnus crossed. Daniel left on full day game drive with two guests and the mission was to camp at the bank of Mara river for the entire day to chance a river crossing. Arriving at the river bank the wildbeest were scattered allover and didnt show any signs of crossing. After serving lunch under an acacia tree Daniel saw wildbeest move one by one and slowly build into a big herd. After some time they started running into two different crossing point and at the bank they seemed scared and had to wait for more than an hour before one carageous led the entire herd into a massive crossing.

The baby leopard

On an afternoon game drive, we came across an unusual sighting of a baby leopard superbly resting between a forked tree trunk. Our guests had seen nearly all the animals the previous day with the exception of  a leopard and were eagerly looking all over as we drove around the rocky outcrops when we suddenly came upon this beauty  in a very relaxed mood. The mother whom we have in the past seen around the same spot  was on this day conspicuously  absent, but due to the relaxed nature of the baby we knew she could be around watching us.

The raging Mara river has already claimed its toll of the wildbeest. Two days ago the cross point near serena  claimed a big number of the animals. the wildbeest got into the river on a steep edge and exit across was narrow. The animals swum to exhaustion and began drownig. The spot now is attracting the scavangers and stinking.

Talek river is a bee hive of activity as the migration is at the heart of the mara where the river is located. Wildbeest big herds are roaming around  posee and burugat plains. On a full day game drive Daniel, Alex, Ferdinard and their guest had good moments along Talek river watching the river crossing. The herds at some stage got confused in between and were going hence forth while others continued to get into the river bank.

In an early morning game drive , ranger Godson and his guests came across a rare sighting of  a female black rhino in the open grasslands. She was not feeding but was slowly walking across from one side of her bushlands habitat to another.  She is normally accompanied by her older calf but on this occasion she was alone. Because of poor eyesight, she kept on stopping  to listen to any slight noise in the surroundings.

It has been slightly over a month since the great wildebeest migration started and the some of the mara plains have already been grazed by the gnus.

On a full-day game-drive Daniel and his guests were thrilled to see thousands of wildebeest right from the main entrance of the National reserve. After driving towards Talek river they noticed the herds were getting bigger and bigger. On arrival huge herds had already gathered on the river bank as though getting ready to cross.

By storing their kill under bushes lions are able to avoid hyaenas and vultures and can feed untill all but the skin and bones is left.

This morning while on a fullday excursionin in the masai mara ranger Alex came across a lioness dragging a wildebeest carcus into the bushes.

Fullday game drive was very interesting when Alex and his guest came across two lionesses attacking a wildebeest. During migration the lions of the masai mara focus their attention on the zebra and the wildebeest.

Lions usually kill their prey by strangulation, but sometimes clamp the nose of large animals such as buffalos.
