Japhet and his four guests were driving along a seasonal river hoping to find a Leopard or Rhino but to their suprise they found a very muddy looking lion sitting under a tree. After watching him for a while the lion stood up and walked towards the small stream. They all thought he was going down for water but this was not the case. He had a half eaten buffalo carcass lying near the shallow water hence explaining why he looked all muddy and rugged. Japhet also noticed three other muddy looking lions sleeping in the near-by bushes.

Very rarely would we get the chance to take pictures of warthogs from a closer range as they are prone to runing away each time we stop to view them. we came upon a family by a small water-hole in the middle of some grasslands and the guests finally had a good opportunity to take their pictures after several attempts as they had  been held there by  thirst. For awhile they looked suprised at us after they had drank some water before finally taking off into the bushes. They are some of the animals that guests enjoy seeing in the game drives owing to their funny facial appearance and their spectacular war of running with the tail held up like antenaes.

The Mara plains are looking nice and lush after about two weeks of rainfall. Ferdinand and his guests were on an early morning gamedrive when one of his guests shouted 'look lion'! Everyone was excited and Ferdinand drove towards the handsome looking lion. After watching him for a while they noticed he kept sniffing on the ground and looking around. It seemed he had picked up a scent of an intruder. The lion kept roaming around but did not seem to find anything at that particular moment.

Lions are very territorial and will not allow other lions who are strangers to roam around in their territory. Once an intruder is found the dominant lion can get very aggresive and fight the intruder to death.

THE SILVER -BACKED JACKALS.

On an early morning game –drive, ranger Jaffery came upon some two silver-backed jackals on the road. Usually on wet days they would spent most of their time in the open grounds and especially if the grass is higher to avoid getting wet and also to have a good view of the surroundings. Having very small mouths and also being very much light-weight, they would go for smaller prey like hares and baby Thomson gazelles but would also scavenge on lion kill sites.

Our scouts reported sighting a lioness with 3 cubs around Ntulele plot area. The mother was hunting but was unsuccessful. Not far away a herd of elephants scampered into an open area and then came together surrounding the calves as if to protect them from a predator. On looking closer, a pack of 20 wild dogs emerged from the bush nearby and spread out to hunt a herd of impala that were nearby. They looked very healthy but were determined to make another kill. Our attention was later drawn to a leopard that had climbed a tree near our main gate into the camp. The scout on duty at the gate had spotted it. But when we arrived, it climbed down and hid in the nearby bush never to appear again. It was a very unique opportunity to see the cubs so close, said one guest 'but more so the wild dogs were exceptional' he added.

The three lion cubs had been sitting perched on a mound for over 5 hours. When Peter and his guests saw the cubs in the morning while on their way to A Full Day Game Drive, he thought that the mother was just away hunting and would be back to invite them for a meal. However, on their way back from the drive, Peter decided to pass by the same area to see what the cubs were up to and sad enough they were still lying in the same area. No mother in sight, Peter was concerned that they may be lost and would be in great danger from other predators like Hyenas and other male lions. Nonetheless, there wasn't much they could do but to wait for their mom  to come home.

Alex was on a Full Day Game Drive with his guests when they came across a family of 20 elephants in the reserve. They stopped to look at them from a distance not knowing that they would pass right by the car. As they watched in disbelief, the herd of elephants scattered and surrounded the car but peacefully walked away, heading for the watering point nearby.

The hippo pool at Mara river.

The level of the water in the Mara river has gone down tremendously in recent days forcing the hippos to look for the few deeper stretches available. Here they would congregate in large numbers. On this day, about 500 individuals were  seen at about mid-day. Normally each group of hippo occupies a favorite part of the river as their home range and territory and would defend it from intruders but circumstances  have forced them to come together and share resources. At night they move out to graze silently on the grasslands surrounding the rivers  but come back to the pool  during the day where the males would  be herd making deep laughter-like noises.

. Hyenas of Lamai plains.

In the middle of the vast Lamai plains there exist a water-hole which is used  by a clan of about 70 hyenas who have made the surroundings their home. On hot days some of these hyenas would be found lying down in the water-hole to cool off. It is also around this water-hole that they would ambush some animals coming to quench their thirst. Sometimes when a pride of lions that roams the area come to the water-hole and stay put for days, the hyenas give way.

Walking by the water-hole.

Ranger Godson came upon some two lionesses patrolling some water-hole on the Lamai grasslands at about mid-day.This is usually the time when grazers come to drink in this place. This two lionesses were strategically walking on both sides of the water-hole with an aim of spotting any potential prey. Unfortunately, the prey had seen them earlier and got scattered away.
