The short rains have finally showed up making the lush mara plains look nice and green with lots of beautiful flowers popping up.

Ferdinand and his guests were on a chilly half-day game drive and found some of the roads to be difficult to drive on due to the heavy rains. Lucky enough as they were driving around they came across a pride of five lions feeding on a wildebeest carcass. As they watched them feed they noticed that there was nothing much left but the lions continued feeding.

Lions live in big prides and need to kill quite often so that they can be well fed.

Japeth and his guests came across two lionesses feeding on a wildebeest carcass in the middle of a grassy plain as they were driving towards mara river. Japeth and his guests took time and watched them feed and after having their fill one of lioness started dragging the remaining carcass to some near-by bushes but it seemed too heavy for her cause she kept putting it down after a short distance.

Lions tend to hide their prey under thickets so as to avoid attracting unwanted attention from hyenas and vultures.

Lioness can have upto four cubs after a gestation period of close to 100 days. Ranger Peter and his guests came across a lioness and two three month old cubs with a fresh wildebeest carcass. Peter's guests found it very interesting to see the mother make a small opening on the wildebeest carcass so that the cubs could feed.

Crossing the river back home.

In the early hours of the morning today, hundreds of wildebeests that were grazing on the Lamai plains some  few days ago after leaving the Mara decided to cross the river back  into  the interior of Serengeti.  A few zebras also accompanied them but as usual were so cautious. The crossing was dramatic in that there was a rocky island in the middle of the river which they headed straight for. Because their hooves were wet, they kept on sliding on the rocks and back into the waters. As a result, they disturbed the hippos that were in a nearby pool which grunted heavily while chasing them  away. Clouds of dust were blowing up on the side of the river that they were entering in.

Ranger John and his three guests were having a nice game drive seeing lots of different animals all over the mara plains. As they were driving along Talek river John spotted a wildebeest carcass hidden under some croton bushes. He went closer to investigate who had made the kill and to everyones suprise it was a huge male Leopard enjoying some wildebeest stake! The Leopard was not shy at all and they watched him for over 30 minutes before moving on.

Male Leopards can weigh upto 65kgs and can large prey like wildebeest, topi and hartebeest but prefer smaller prey so that they can drag them up the tree.

Ferdinand and his four guests started their full-day game drive early and were hoping to get down to Mara river. Ferdinand took a nice game route through the Burrungat and Meta plains and later started driving along 'Ol keju Rongai' stream where they saw thousands of wildebeest and zebra. As they were driving along the stream they noticed some wildebeest jumping into the water and some of the young seemed to be having alot of fun.

Two rhinos on the sand river plains.

Our guests who were on game drive near the sand river plains  were rewarded by a sighting of two black rhinos which had just crossed over the dry sand river from the masai mara. They were a mother and an older calf of about three years of age. They had not been spotted for almost two months in their bushland habitat along the river and therefore it was a good plus for our guests who were really longing to see one.

Migration season brings alot of food for most predators and the vultures. River crossings down at mara river are very spectacular and can last for close to an hour depending on the size of the wildebeest herd. Some of the crossing points are easy to tackle while others are tough.

Peter and his two guests went down to mara river and at one of the crossing points they saw a few dead gnus and alot of floating carcasses in the river. Vultures take advantage and feed on this carcasses without worring about being chased away by the larger predators like Lions and Hyenas.

It was during an early morning game-drive when ranger Peter and his guests came across a secretary bird busy having its morning meal. The secretary bird kept on plucking off bit by bit of the prey making it difficult to see what it was feeding on. A short while later the secretary bird carried the prey high up and started swallowing it.

 Secretary bird also known as the hunting bird spend most of their day walking in the grass fields looking for prey like mice but aslo tackle snakes very well when they come across them.

The king taking life easy.

On an early morning game drive, we found a beautiful male lion sitting on a grassy termite mound in a very relaxed way. He had a full stomach after having had a breakfast of some wildebeest  in the thickets nearby and so was in a happy mood. He never moved much but he would from time to time switch his sight from one direction to the other. The guests thought that he was just taking life easy.
