After a successful first day in the Greater Mara Isaaten Conservancy, Charles and his guests were enthusiastic to continue the lucky spell with a visit to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. He had planned a FUll Day drive in the reserve bringing with him a sumptuous lunch to keep hunger at bay as they serached for the wildlife. Like the first day, the reserve did not disappoint as charles managed to show his guest 5 cheetahs and a pride of 20 lions. The climax of the drive was the pride of lions that consisted 11 cubs, 7 lionesses and 2 male lions. Pride kills a lone hyena.

Hyenas are not territorial like the cats and will easily mix up with other hyenas without any fight. They usually find themselves colliding with the lions as lions believe hyenas are intruding into their territory , if hyena is alone will be killed on the spot. Hyena is known to kill the lion Cubs for a meal.This was the case today when Dues found hyena killed by a pride of 27 individuals of mixed ages. Lions will not eat the Hyena after killing it

Weaver birds are the only birds which make the most beautiful nests and are the best Architectures in the birds Family. Today Deus on his game drive spotted Black headed social weaver birds busy making their nests. The nests were hanging on the edge of the tree branch and others were busy looking for the best spots. Males are the ones which do the nesting and they start to make the nests when they reach the Age of two years and above. When the nest is ready it will invite the female to inspect it whereby the female will accept or reject it. If the next is rejected then the male will be forced to make another nest until it’s finally accepted by the female which will then start to lay its eggs.

The rains this month have been fantastic, and following so shortly after the fires, the regrowth has been phenomenal, almost overnight the landscape changed from browns and black to verdant green gold.

Daniel and his four guest talked about this changes on their way to sopa to chance the sopa pride of lions that capitalise on buffalos for their daily meal. To their luck they found the pride in one of their favourite river riparian with remains of what was their meal(buffalo) but as they watched the cubs busy chewing, two female featured behind a bush to check on vulture landing a few meters away.Daniel opted to drive there to find out the female carrying a bitting(buffalo calf) for the pride for a later part of the day.

Reporting Date: 06.03.2013

Migration is currently at Central Serengeti along Moru Kopjes and Simba kopjes .They are slowly heading towards the North western corridor along the Grummeti river. This area has seen a lot of rains and will provide them with lush green grasses. They will stay along this area for the coming two months before deciding to approach the Northern Serengeti by June, ready to start crossing to Mara through Mara River and Sand River.

As we were doing our game drive we saw Hyenas raising their heads up looking at the soaring glides of Vultures and started to follow where they were landing.  The connection between the Vulture in the sky and the Hyenas and Jackals on ground is an amazing phenomenon. This was the case today as we came across  a Zebra kill.

Well fade male lion together with three grown up lioness were found under the shed of the Balanite tree resting, rubbing each other’s head as well as panting to cool their body. Lions rest for at least 16-18 hours a day. Female do most of the hunting and are only helped by the male when they have to bring down a heavy prey like the Buffalos or Giraffe .That’s why most of the time you  find Male lions in very good state as opposed to females who are usually disadvantaged whenever they make a small kill like a Warthog as male hardly leaves anything behind.

The rainy season has begun smoothly with slight showers mostly in the afternoon.

The Mara game reserve grassy plains are filled with very long grass making it difficult for the cheetah to hunt. Recently the park rangers burnt some of this long grass to create room for fresh grass. Peter and his guests were happy to see all sorts of animals as drove through the burnt out grass plains. They saw lots on plains game nibbling on the fresh grass growing when suddenly they bumped into four cheetah feeding. As they watched them feed Peter explained to his guests why the mother cheetah kept scanning the sorrounding.

We loose alot of cheetah to attacks from bigger predators like lions due to suprise attacks as they rest or feed. Cheetahs mothers are very proctective and keep and eye out at all times.

Gnus (Wildebeests) are known to migrate from South to north of Serengeti national park which has become part of the wonders of the World. We have some which form the tail of the migration and they end remaining behind while others migrate. Currently we have around 600 Gnus along the Lamai area with few Zebras and other Antelopes. As they usual give birth between January and March some already have babies. This has given Hyenas an opportunity to make easy kills of the new born babies.

Our guests have been happy to see the migration here even though it is not yet time for the Migration.

We came across a pride of four lions with their cubs on a Kopje overlooking the horizons and at the same time enjoying the sun rise. Whenever the night is very cold Lions will relax on the Rock waiting for the Sunrise which also gives them an advantage of seeing the prey from very far.
