When the temperature rises during the day both carnivore and herbivore will seek a place to quench their thirst and at the same time forgetting their differences.

This afternoon zebras, Topis, Wildebeests, Impala, hartebeests Thompson Gazelles, hyenas gathered at the water holes of Lamai plains.  After they had quenched their thirsty it’s when each started to realize that it is close to an enemy scattering into different directions for safety.

The weather is mostly cloudy for the better part of the day due to the on coming long rains . The coolness of the weather makes most of the animals active for longer hours.

Ranger Alex and his guests were fortunate enough to see a pod of hippos grazing along side a seasonal river in the Eastern part of the Mara game reserve.

Hippos are semi-aquatic herbivores that spend most of the day in pools of water and mostly graze at night. They can spend up-to five hours grazing and can eat 40-60 kg of grass per day. The males are very aggressive and territorial.

Late evening and early morning we hear Lion roaring. Male lions roar to advertise their presence to other prides and also to intimidate opponents and show dominance to the pride and strengthen their social bond.

A medium sized Buffalo was wallowing in a wide water hole full of mud .This usually cools their body making them feel   comfortable. The mud plastered skin when dry peels off with the ticks making them clean and tidy.

Today we saw a herd of Buffalo surrounded by Ox-peckers. Buffalo skin is like a pasture for parasites (ticks) which the Ox-peckers feed on.  Buffalos and Ox-peckers have a symbiotic relationship with each other and  it  adds to  their chances of survival.

Predators such as lion, cheetah and leopard tend to consume a small fraction of prey their prey. Some of the predators such as hyenas and jackals are known to walk around looking for carrion, a behaviour we call scavenging.

Scavengers are very important as they almost totally consume the remaining part of the carcass thus helping curb spread of disease caused by flies that will breed in the rotting carcass.

Ostrich   inhabits mostly on the plains and it is one of the tallest birds on earth and grows to about 9 ft high and weigh 160kg.They eat mostly vegetation and stones to help in the digestion. Their long neck helps spot predators from far. They have excellent sense of hearing. They lay eggs on the open ground. The female incubates the eggs during the day and the male at night, this also protects the eggs against jackals, Monitor lizards and some birds like the Egyptian vultures. Male are known to be polygamists and the dominant male assist the female incubating the eggs. They are known to leave up to 40 years

On our full day game drive we came across a tower of Giraffes along  Bologonja plains and below them there was a troop of Baboons. Baboons use the vantage of Giraffe which are able to see danger from far this enables baboons to look for their food peacefully. Their greatest predator is the leopard

Early morning  and late evening  ours is the best for bird watchers around the camp. We have various species of birds like Lillac breasted Roller, White Headed Buffalo Weaver, Flapped Lark, Green Pigeons, Rupp ell’s long tailed Starlings, Greater Blue glossy Starlings, Fork tailed Drongo, White Headed Barbet, Purple Grenedier (Waxbills), Red necked Francolin, CoquI Francolin, Pied Crows, Marabou Stork, Scartel Chested Sunbird, Orange throated long Claw and Magpie Shrikes are among few birds that make the camp sky with birds as flying flowers.

Currently Lamai plains is full of Topis. They are spread all over and any presence of the predator they will produce what is called false alarm snooze to alert the rest of the animals around.  This puff sound serves as an early warning to the herd and also prepares them for the first line of defense
