As you drive along the Mara River you will come across schools of Hippo on a pool of water, which forms a territory. Any intruder to the pool will not be spared . The way Hippos stay in the pool of water reflects the way we humans stay in the hot tub with simple reason of either cooling our body or warming it .Hippos use water as place for refuge during the day  as they cannot withstand the sun.Their skin is very venerable to heat and will easily form cracks subjecting them to severe pains.

 Mara River is known to harbor many crocodiles including some giant ones. They intermingle very well with hippos while in water. Though they both stay in the water Hippos can only hold their breath in the water to a maximum of five minutes while crocodiles can stay under water for over one hour. The guests on the game drive spotted one big crocodile which had popped out of the water after almost hours in the water and wondered how they manage this yet they do not have gills like the fish. Their Ranger Deus told them that Crocodiles can hold their breath underwater for more than an hour; this ability depends on a tiny fragment of the animal's hemoglobin the protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Crocodiles use a waste product of metabolism - the bicarbonate ions formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in water - as the trigger for hemoglobin to unload the oxygen it carries. The more energy the crocodile's cells burn up, the more carbon dioxide they produce. So the bicarbonate triggering mechanism ensures that large quantities of oxygen are supplied only to the hard-working tissues that need it the most, thus conserving a submerged crocodile's limited supplies. This efficient system of oxygen allocation, combined with the reptile's very slow metabolism, explains how it is able to survive underwater for so long.

Guests on game drive were amazed by the wonderful landscape.  The area is coved by long grass making it look like rice/ Oat plantation .The Ranger informed the Clients that ,the soil is rich in nutrients and when it rains  the grass gets the  ecological agility to recover within a short period of time from the  drought . The tall grass creates a cover for the cats when hunting giving them a big advantage which on the other hand  becomes a disadvantage to the prey as they cannot see the cats easily.

The long grass facilitated by the short rains in the Maasai Mara game Reserve is poising a challange to the predators. Acquiring a meal is difficult but the predators must survive by whatever means.

While on game drive in the reserve  charles and his guest encountered an unusual meal sharing  between the hyeanas and a lioness. The lioness was skinny and probably not well or recovering from an illness. Lions and hyeanas are rivals but this time round they were dinning together but a limit line was still kept. The meal was part of what a resident pride may have left behind.

A Zebra herd appears shiny and very bright, especially when the day is very sunny. When they start to run they create confusion to predators by mingling. They usually behave intentionally that way so as to confuse the predators. Their coloration and gregariousness camouflages them confusing their predators even further and makes them inaccessible. This was the case today when the lioness ambushed them with no success.

Hyenas are known to be coward scavengers. This is  now  being proved wrong by the Hyena’s of the  Lamai Plains which have taken advantage of the water holes to net the  Topis as they come to drink water, making them  become  successful good hunters. They are hunting as solitary and in concert. Since they do not know how to peacefully  kill, they end up eating the topi while still alive, instigating severe pains.Topi would be seen Groaning in pains as hyenas tear  it into pieces with their strong jaws leaving only blood on the ground as each Hyena  run for cover  with a piece on the mouth. Its  painful to watch!!!!.but this is nature.

Deus came across two Male lions resting under the shade of the balanite tree; they both had very dark Mane which drew the attention of the guests who wanted to know the cause. Lion dark Mane is associated with genetic state of maturity and testosterone production. Female lion consider male with dark mane as strong, energetic, and handsome and with high reproduction success.

On the lamai plains, Godson and his guests spotted the Mother cheetah with her four full grown up cubs. She has been remarkably over protective to her cubs to reach this age with this number. Cheetah has high mortality rate and one reason is the  competition among the cats which leads to even killing each other’s cubs. Among the cats family cheetah is the least defensive, leaving most of its kill to scavengers.Today the  mother just fed her cubs well with the entire  kill.

A game drive into the Mara Game Reserve never cease to produce something unique everyday. Daniel and charles with their guest while driving through posee plains encountered these elegant,calm and determined cheetahs walking on one of access. The mission seemed to be towards the Talek junction  an area teeming with Thompson gazzelles. The two brothers are still strong after losing one of their brother nearly two years ago in the same area. They surprise many visitors by their utter disregard of humans by using vehicles as lookouts.

When the Elephant bulls are on Musth they become very temperamental and can easily charge.

This was the case today with our usual bull elephant  which  comes to the camp occasionally to graze on the creeping plants found in abundance around  here. The bull elephant was seen moving between the tents and at one time it went very close to the guests who were seated outside their tents deck. looked at them and then changed the direction towards the Restaurant. Later it blocked the  pathway  leading to  the restaurant and continued grazing ignoring our presence as we were escorting the guests to their tents after their lunch. We decided to use the vehicle, but this again could not deter it .The vehicle had to avoid the pathway and went through the grass but the elephant decided to follow the vehicle with a motive of charging. This was very unusual with this Bull but being on musth it was understandable.
