This year the Mara/Serengeti ecosystem has received alot of rainfall. Generally by end of June every year the mega herds of wildebeest find their way into the Mara and stay around until late October. Due to heavy rainfall in the month of May the wildebeest are sweeping the extensive Serengeti plains slower than they normally would.

We are expecting our first herd to cross Sand river anytime between 24-48 hours. The huge herd is between Mbologoja and sand river. Another huge herd is slowly sweeping the western corridor of Serengeti and is expected to cross sand river in a weeks time.

After pacing up and down the hyenas decided to join the feast. The lioness was still busy feeding, Japheth and his guests thought a huge fight would errupt. But to everyones suprise they all started feeding together! It was an unusual truce formed maybe because there was plenty of food for all.

Lions and hyenas are both gregarious and generally do not tolerate each others presence.

Japheth on a half-day game drive had planned to go down to Talek river hippo point. Not far from his destination a pack of over twenty Hyenas were moving back and forth. On arrival at the scene he saw a lioness feeding on a hippo carcass. There was not much left and the Hyenas wanted to get something to eat before it was all over but the lioness would not give them a chance. As Japheth drove further down he saw the rest of pride who were relaxing under some bushes. His guests enjoyed watching the commotion between the Lioness and the Hyenas.

In the conservancy we have plenty of plains game around with big herds of elephants passing through once in a while. We have a resident herd of buffalo that has been around ever since the camp opened. This particular herd of buffalo has become so accustomed to the presence of the camp making them feel at home anywhere around the camp.

The rainy season is over and now we are getting into the cold season. Most of the animals are very active for the better part of the morning during this season.

Charles and his two guests set out towards Mara river and were hoping to find some hippos. On arrival they saw alot of plains game relaxing by the river side. While driving along the river they saw lots of hippos and crocs. They found most of the hippos relaxing on small islands in the middle of the river.

Generally hippos are found in water during the day so as to avoid the scorching sun but on a cool day they can be seen relaxing on the river banks.

Some of the many wild animals we have around us can get acustomed to human presence and become habituated.

A pride of Lions living around Keekorok air-strip have become very comfortable around cars, making them the one of the most famous pride in the Mara. The Keekorok pride was found walking on the road and they seemed to have a specific destination in mind. To everyones suprise they went direct to the waiting bay at Keekorok airstrip and sat down as though they were waiting to board a plane! It took a while before they moved on causing a slight worthwhile delay.

Peter and his guests were having a good fullday game-drive with lots of plains game relaxing by the road side where the grass is a little shorter. At around noon the mara heat had forced most of the game to seek shade or go down to water holes. While driving along a lugga Peter came across a herd of elephant wallowing in the mud and they noticed one of the young ellys trying to cover its whole body with mud by rolling over and over.

Elephants wallow in the mud to cool off and protect their skin from being damaged by the sun.

Sopa lion pride over the last couple of month has been very entertaining to our visitors into maasai mara reserve. The last episode was the breathtaking fight between them and the buffaloes. The pride had gone a number of days without success but fate finally sided with them. Ferdinand and his guest were on an half day game drive found the remains of what was part of buffalo team that was chasing away the mighty king of the jungle. They spend sometime watching the lions reduce the buffalo carcass to nothing but a sekeleton.

The long grass in the maasai mara game reserve is keeping most of the herbivores outside the reserve where the grass is kept short by the maasai livestock.This is important to the plains game as they can spot the predators at a distance. The giraffes are exempted from this  because of their height.

On full day game drive Ferdinard and his guests came across a tower of giraffe that posed for them when they stopped infront as if they were photogenic giving all sort of profiles.

After singling out the lone Buffalo the Lions decided to take it to the next level. Peter and his guests were amused by the determination the Lions had. Before the Buffalo could get back to the rest of the herd the Lions had already surrounded it and tried to pin it down. The battle continued for a short while without any success and soon enough the rest of the herd arrived and chased the Lions away. This time round the Lions were chased over 100 yards away from the herd. Peter's guests found it funny to see the king of the jungle run for dear life with over 500 angry Buffalo behind them.
