While watching the breathe taking battle Peter and his guests noticed a huge herd of Buffalo hurriedly running towards the Buffalo cow and her calf. His guests were anxious to see what would happen when the huge herd arrived and sure enough the Lions fled the scene one by one after realising they had been out numbered by the mighty beasts. Peter decided to follow them for a while to acertain wether the Lions had really given up or were willing to give it a final chance. To his guests suprise they re-grouped  and went ahead and started singling out a lone Buffalo that was lagging behind the herd.

Peter and his five guests were on a fullday gamedrive and were hoping to see some Lions. They spend the better part of the morning around Sopa plains looking for the Sopa pride. Around midday they came across a lone lioness sitting under a thicket with a huge herd of Buffalo nearby. After a short while they came across the rest of the pride and after a short while the lions started heading towards the buffaloes. To everyone's suprise the lions sorrounded a lone buffalo and her calf who had been lagging behind and tried to take down the calf. After several attempts the lions had to flee because the rest of the herd came to the rescue.

The end of the long rains is around the corner and maasai mara game reserve is lushing with grass ready to welcome the great migration like it has done many years back. Some part of the reserve host many plain game and grass has been kept short by the daily graze. Its here you find them in big partys in that they can spot any predator at a distance. peter and his guest came across this groupings relatively relaxed.

Claws in the cat play a vital role of holding and pinning down prey.They need attention now and then, and today on an early morning game drive peter and his guest came across the three big boys of sopa area on the act. they were clawing and feeding from a buffalo they killed in the morning. One of the boys had probably realised the claws needed some attention and went ahead to sharpen by the tree they were shading from as the other lied down on guard of the kill to  keep away the jackals.

The resident tower of girraffe is a common feature around the camp everyday. They wonder south of the camp and drink at the salt lick and wonder towards the villages everyday. One female gave birth two weeks ago and is hiding the young one behind the hills as the resident male lion has been near the salt lick for acouple of weeks now.

The male giraffe was by the camp fire browsing on the big acacia, even with waiters moving around with their duties.He is confident at home i guess!

The elephants are known to live in martriach groupings and several related groupings come together when there is need to move from one place to another. The reserve has been receiving substantial amount of rainfall making the lowland in the sparse savannah swampy. the eles dont like this as it makes movement difficult.

Today on full day game drive Daniel and japhet with the guest encountered this massive road crossing moving towards high points at Talek junction.

A few days ago we pointed that the sopa pride has a preference of taking buffaloes for their daily meal.The herd on the other hand is doing well healthwise, since over the last three years the rain pattern in the reserve has been good facilitating good pastures for all the herbivores. The elephants bieng the largest of the mammals in the savannah are not spared by the bugs. They have developed a habit of wallowing and this is for cooling and later on plastering themselves with mud. Once this is done the elephants know their favourite points to go and scratch. This is mostly important in getting rid of the bugs and if you observe very keenly this points you will notice dead bugs as a result of this. Daniel and the guests came across this elephant and were imppressed by the  bum scratching.

The sopa lion pride in maasi mara national reserve specialises in taking buffaloes for their meal. The pride which numbers between 17 and 20 are known to follow the big herd(about one thouand five hundred) and when need for a meal arises they team up and have always succeeded no matter how long it takes them. They are healthy and fit in all seasons.

Daniel left the camp with a family of four to the reserve to look for this pride. After a brief search in the territory, they  spotted them at a distance sorrounding a meal. They had brought down a buffalo in the morning but the resident males arrived and took over the meal. The meal being in the open and was a clear day, the cats were sun baked and  took refuge to nearby bushes.The one on sentry came to seek shade under our car! The king of the jungle also tried  labourisely to cover the blood and stomach residue to minimise attracting the scavangers.

The maasai mara is still pouring with rains and the grass growing high and higher everyday. This creats a scenario whereby if you are out on a game drive its tricky finding the cats, but  they also have the same problem locating prey. So for them to locate prey one of the best sites is on top of termite mounds to scanning . This was the case with japhet on full day game drive who spotted 3 lioness on a vantage point but later on dashed to a nearby bush to take a nap when they realised there was nothing in sight. They choose a nice sleeping method to spend the sunny part of day on the lashing grass.
